وقد مدح الشاعر الجاهلي بفضائل ثابتة كالشجاعة والكرم والحلم ورجاحة العقل ورفعة النسب، وكلها ترسم الصورة الخلقية المثلى للإنسان في رؤياه، كما كان يتخذ من المدح المبالغ فيه ـ باستثناء زهير بن أبي سُلمى مثلا ـ حافزًا للممدوح على المزيد من العطاء.
وفي عصر صدر الإسلام، ظهر تيار جديد في المديح، هو مدح النبي محمد (صلى الله عليه وسلم).
يمتد عهد النهضة من أواخر القرن الثامن عشر وحتى هذا اليوم، إذ بعد الحروب الصليبية انطوى أهل الشرق على أنفسهم انطواءً كاد أن يكون كاملًا، وكان الغرب قد بدؤوا بوضع قواعد علومهم وفنونهم وأساسات تقدمهم على غيرهم ولم يصل للشرق أي شيءٍ منها، فكان الشعر لا يعدو نوعًا من أنواع التسلية لشعوب أنهكتها العازة واجتاحها الفقر فتقدمت بعض البلدان وتجرأت على الاحتكاك بالغرب، فكان أول من فعل ذلك مصر ولبنان.[٧]
إذ هي صادرة عن حب صادق، وإعجاب تام ببطولة سيف الدولة الذي يجسد حلم أبي الطيب بالبطل المخلِّص من اعتداءات الروم.
